Seminars

Below is full the catalogue of the Panth-Punjab Project seminars. The first collection of seminars began during the farmers protest to provide a deeper Punjab and Sikh centric analysis of the ground realities and how they connect to global conditions.

Exploring the sangat-based resistance in the Delhi Morcha and Beyond. With Moninder Singh and Parmjeet Singh.

This discussion explores the immediate context behind the current Morcha in Delhi. We will look at the impact of the bills and how they relate to agrarian policy in Punjab more generally, as well as understanding how the sangat-based resistance developed organically around the world.

Confronting Imperialism From The Grassroots. With Harsha Walia.

Since the beginning of the Delhi Morcha, we have seen renewed waves of protest around the world, as well as numerous debates about the goals and tactics of resistance. We will speak with Harsha Walia about the lessons the diaspora should learn from those on the ground in Punjab and Delhi. We will discuss strategies to effectively confront imperialism around the world including the importance of grassroots organizing, direct action, and solidarity.

Exploring Nationalism, Neoliberalism and Resistance in Punjab. With Prabhjot Singh.

This talk delves into the background, from the Green Revolution in the 1960s, Sikh sangarsh in the 1980s, and the introduction of neoliberalism in the 1990s. We will discuss how Punjab and the broader region has changed through these processes, and what role Hindu nationalism has played in shaping this trajectory.

Charting the future of Punjab and the Sikh revolution. With Bhai Mandhir Singh.

For months, activists have organized across Punjab in defiance of three new laws that would pave the road for the corporate takeover of Punjab’s farmlands. Grassroots responses included boycotting corporations, blocking railways, and massive demonstrations. Following months of Delhi’s silence however, Punjab marched on Delhi to smash the state’s arrogance once and for all.

Understanding Punjab’s agrarian, economic, and environmental crises. With Dr Gian Singh.

The recent Morcha in Delhi has brought the survival of agriculture in Punjab to the forefront of our minds around the world. While the recent bills are a devastating blow to Punjab’s future, they are only one link in a long chain of policies imposed by Delhi. Even before this, Punjab has been battling exorbitant amounts of agrarian debt, farmer suicides, environmental degradation and other challenges for years.

Exploring History, Impact and Goals of Farmers Protests. With Moninder Singh.

A 30-minute segment on the agricultural (farmer) protests that have laid siege to the Indian capital of Delhi with Stirling Faux and Mo Amir on Global News CKNW (980 AM Radio).

This discussion focuses on the history of this movement, impact of laws on farmers, mobilization of diaspora Sikh/Punjabi community, and short-term/long-term goals of the movement.

Delhi Morcha in a Global Context. With Dr Navyug Gill.

While our attention has been on Delhi and the recent bills, observers have noted that there is much more at stake than just the livelihood of farmers. Beyond the immediacy of the bills, there is an underlying churning that will impact the region and the globe as a whole. We speak with Navyug Gill to discuss the Delhi Morcha in this wider context of diversity, solidarity, and democracy.

The Politics of Hindutva and Popular Resistance. With Suchitra Vijayan.

Recent depictions of Narendra Modi have portrayed his BJP government as an unstoppable force advancing towards their vision of a Hindu Rashtra. Demonetization, the recent Citizenship Amendment laws, and the abrogation of Section 370 are cited as examples of the right-wing’s determination to proceed despite widespread opposition. Massive resistance against the neoliberal farmer bills, however, appears to have stopped them in their tracks.

Caste, Land, and Liberation. With Gurinder Azaad.

As thousands camp on the borders of Delhi demanding that the state repeal the recent farmer's bills, one slogan we consistently hear from the frontlines is “Kisaan-Mazdoor Ekta Zindabad.” While much of the coverage of the Delhi Morcha obscures the violence of caste and its central role in the structure of the Indian state and society, this session will discuss the responsibility of the mobilization to meaningfully move towards the abolition of caste and liberation for all.

Kisaan Morcha and Sikh Liberation. With Dr Kanwaljit Singh.

One thing that is clear to every observer of the Delhi Morcha is that Sikh spirit and the Khalsa Panth are the heart and soul of this mobilization. We will talk with Kanwaljit Singh to better understand why Sikhi has been the driving force of revolutionary uprisings and various conflicts with Delhi throughout Punjab’s history. We will also explore what this tangibly looks like in the current moment and why some commentators are so determined to erase Sikhi from the narrative.

Dalit Politics and Resistance in Punjab. With Gurdeep Singh.

Many conversations around politics in Punjab continue to obscure the violence of caste and its central role in the structure of the Indian state and society. This series will engage with Dalit and Bahujan thinkers and activists to discuss our collective responsibility to meaningfully move towards the abolition of caste and liberation for all.

We explore various forms of Bahujan political mobilization and discuss the possibilities of collective resistance to Hindutva and Indian nationalism.

Neoliberalism and Grassroots Democracy: Understanding Punjab Post-1991. With Hamir Singh.

While a lot of our focus in recent months has been on the Delhi Morcha, and the underlying agriculture issues in Punjab, these immediate issues are only symptoms of broader social and political crises. Hamir Singh is a prominent journalist and activist who has writing about these issues and involved in several grassroots alternatives as well. We will speak with him to delve a bit deeper into the underlying causes of Punjab's current challenges.
